How to legalise a document

Notarial Services

The British Embassy in Tokyo and the British Consulate-General in Osaka offer a number of notarial services as follows. For enquiries about these services or to make an appointment, please contact the offices during office hours:

British Embassy (Monday - Friday 9:30-12:30)

Fees
Fees will be calculated to the yen equivalent of the pound charge. You can pay for this service by cash, visa or mastercard. Please visit our consular and passport fees page for more information.


Certificate of Signature
If you need a Certificate of Signature for purchasing, selling or shipping a car, you will need to submit your British passport or Japanese Certificate of Alien Registration. The charge per certificate is the Japanese Yen equivalent of £27.00.

Certified Copies of Identity Documents:

If you need a certified copy of your British passport, birth certificate, marriage licence, driving licence or utility bills, you will need to submit the original document. There is no need to submit a photocopy in addition to the original. The charge for this service is the Japanese Yen equivalent of £25.00.

Wills:

When drafting a Will, you should take professional advice from a lawyer . The Embassy or Consulate-General can witness your signature. The charge for this service is the Japanese Yen equivalent of £27.00.

Affidavits and Statutory Declarations:
If you need to make an Affidavit or Statutory Declaration at the Embassy or Consulate-General you can find a sample format below. The charge for these services is the Japanese Yen equivalent of £50.00.

Affidavit:

I, (full name), of (full residential address, occupation and full address of company),

make oath and say as follows ...

(Your statement)

Statutory Declaration:

I, (full name), of (full residential address, occupation and full address of company),

do solemnly and sincerely declare that ...

(Your statement)

And I make this solemn declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true and by virtue of the provisions of the Statutory Declarations Act, 1835.
