Embassy and UK Border Agency outreach work on visas (2009/10/12)
Members of the British Embassy Visa Section and UK Border Agency (UKBA) colleagues from the region have been conducting a series of outreach exercises to talk about the UK visa system and how it applies to Japan.
Throughout this week, members of the Embassy Visa Section and the Consulate-General in Osaka have been joined by colleagues from Manila and have held a series of events across Japan to talk about the UK visa system. Presentations with question and answer sessions took place in Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo.
The aim of these events is to help clarify the Points Based System (PBS) that the UK now uses, and to explain the criteria that need to be fulfilled when applying for a visa. In particular, the events have been aimed towards businesses sending their staff to the UK and to students thinking of applying to study in the UK.
British Ambassador David Warren has welcomed the efforts of UKBA staff, saying, “These events are an important part of getting the correct message across to our visa customers. They are a good opportunity to correct myths and misunderstandings about the UK visa process and show potential applicants how much we appreciate their interest in the UK.”
Staff from the Embassy Visa Section are also currently carrying out a series of face-to-face meetings with potential applicants, education agents and businesses at the VFS offices in Tokyo, in order to help them prepare correctly for the application process. These meetings and the events above have been well received with potential applicants in Japan, who appreciate the efforts that the Embassy and UKBA are making to help explain the process.
