Our Consulate-General
British Consulate-General in Osaka
Based in the heart of the important Kansai region, the British Consulate-General in Osaka is responsible for the 29 prefectures in western Japan, from Aichi, Gifu and Toyama down to Okinawa. Headed by a Consul-General and with three British and twenty-three Japanese members of staff, its main responsibilities are trade promotion, attracting inward investment into the UK and consular services, such as the protection of British citizens in Japan.
On the consular services side, the Consulate-General issues birth and death certificates, notarial certificates and documents required to marry in Japan. It also visits British citizens arrested in western Japan, can assist in contacting relatives overseas in an emergency and can provide information on English-speaking help groups, lawyers and other professionals. It does not issue British passports or visas to visit the UK − these can only be obtained through the Embassy in Tokyo.
