Consular and Visa Section
Consular Section
The primary responsibility of Consular Section is to protect the interests of British nationals overseas, a duty to which the British Government attaches the highest priority. The Embassy provides consular services to British and certain other nationalities in eastern Japan - Hokkaido down to Shizuoka, Nagano and Niigata Prefectures.(Consular services in western Japan - except passports, which are only available from the Embassy - are provided by the British Consulate-General in Osaka. Please see the Consulate-General's page for details.)
These services include the issue and replacement of British passports, the registration of births and deaths, acceptance of notices of marriage, and issuing Certificates of No Impediment. Please note that, with very few exceptions, consular services attract statutory fees.
If a British person is arrested in Japan, Consular staff will visit him or her on request, offer assistance, and continue to visit regularly if subsequently imprisoned. Consular staff also offer help and advice to British nationals in other cases of need.
