Defence Section

The Defence Section works to develop a stronger Defence Relationship between Japan and the UK, and more effective working relationships between the UK Armed Forces and Japan's Self Defence Forces, by promoting cooperation and various forms of exchange activities between them and their respective Ministries of Defence.

The Section promotes UK Defence Policy in Japan and reports to UK on relevant Japanese Defence and Security issues.  It organises an active programme of inward and outward official visits (e.g. Senior Officers, training visits and visiting warships). In addition, it conducts various seminars/workshops and representational duties at commemoration events, in cooperation with Japanese stakeholders. The Defence Section works closely with the Embassy's Political Section where foreign and defence policy overlap, especially on matters relating to international security (e.g. peace support operations, conflict resolution).

The Defence Attache also holds an appointment as the UK Liaison Officer to the United Nations Command (Rear) which provides military logistic support to the United Nations Command based in the Republic of Korea.
