Applying for a UK passport in Japan

Where to apply
Resident in Eastern Japan
If you live in Eastern Japan, you should apply for passports at our Tokyo office
Resident in Western Japan
If you live in Western Japan, you should apply for passports at our Tokyo office. However, if you need an emergency passport you can go to the British Consulate General in Osaka.
Passport services at our offices
The passport services available at our different offices vary. Make sure the office you plan to use offers the services you need.
At our office in Tokyo:
- collect passport application forms
- collect the LS01 form to report your passport lost or stolen
- pay your passport fee in person by cash, or credit card
- submit your passport application form in person.
At our Office in Osaka:
- collect the LS01 form to report your passport lost or stolen
- apply for an Emergency passport
You can also:
- post your application form to the Tokyo office. You will need to send the fee in cash using cash registered mail (in Japanese, "genkinkakitome") or fill in the credit card authorisation form. If you wish to have the processed passport returned to you by post, please also enclose postal stamps to the value of ¥700.
What to submit
To apply for a UK passport in Japan you must submit:
- your completed application form
- your 2 passport photographs
- your supporting documents
- your previous passport
- the correct fee or credit card authorisation form.
Processing your passport application
It takes 10 working days to process your passport application from the date we receive it.
Our staff will not be able to process your application or there may be a delay issuing your passport if:
- you have used the wrong form or completed it incorrectly
- you do not provide the correct fee or credit card authorisation form
- you do not include the correct postal
Please note that from 1 April 2008, no refunds will be issued for unsuccessful or fraudulent passport applications.
Cancellation of passports containing valid visas, work permits or residence permits
If your passport is due to expire and contains valid visas, work or residence permits, please check with the issuing authorities that the cancellation of your passport will not invalidate them. The British Embassy can take no responsibility for the validity of visas, work or residence permits within cancelled passports. Please make sure you have made these checks before you submit your application for a passport renewal. Japanese visas can be transferred to the new passport free of charge at Japanese Immigration Bureau.
